Aidan Kaminska, a sophomore studying in communications and a midfielder on the Minutemen lacrosse team, was born in Stony Brook, New York, according to an obituary.
The obituary adds, “Aidan was recognized for his contagious smile, being a nice friend, and being a tremendous athlete.” It is unclear how he died.
According to his obituary, Kaminska began playing lacrosse at an early age as part of a newly formed program at Port Jefferson, New York. He had been a member of a number of travel lacrosse teams, including Legacy Lacrosse, where he was a member of the 2016 World Series of Youth Lacrosse title team.
According to his obituary, Kaminska was a captain on both the boys’ football and lacrosse teams in high school. In his junior year of lacrosse, he was selected All-County Midfielder. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, his senior year was canceled.
Kaminska was selected “Rookie of the Week” as a redshirt freshman after scoring three goals in a game against Hofstra University, which issued a statement on Twitter expressing its “deepest sympathies to the Kaminska family and the (UMass lacrosse) community.”
According to his obituary and Massachusetts sports, Kaminska was named to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie team for the 2022 season, as well as the CAA All-Tournament team.
“We lost an incredible young man way too early in this life, and we send prayers of comfort and strength,” Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade said in a statement.
A brief statement from the school stated, “The Massachusetts athletics department expresses condolences to Aidan’s family, friends, teammates, and coaches.” Other comments followed a similar pattern, with little information about Kaminska’s death. Kaminska was from Port Jefferson, New York, on Long Island, and after his death, he was returned there. The specifics of his memorial services were made public by the school. On Friday, a wake was held in East Setauket, New York, followed by a funeral on Saturday morning in the Infant Jesus Chapel at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson. He was laid to rest in Setauket’s St. James RC Church.
